 Alpha-lipoic acid is one of the most powerful antioxidants ever discovered. It is a vitamin-like sulfur-containing compound that is synthesized naturally in the human body. Sometimes it is referred to as alpha-lipoate, thioctic acid, or just lipoic acid. One of its most important characteristics is that it is both fat-soluble and water-soluble. This enables it to provide antioxidant protection in a much wider range of physiological environments throughout the body, which has resulted in some scientists referring to alpha-lipoic acid as the "universal" antioxidant.

 Every second, 24 hours a day, oxidative damage caused by free radicals occurs in our bodies through the energy-producing reactions that take place within mitochondria of our cells. The cumulative damage inflicted by free radicals can have numerous negative age-related effects. This free radical theory of aging is supported by many leading researchers, one key proponent being world-renowned biochemist, Bruce Ames, PhD, from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Ames and colleagues maintain that “oxidant by-products of normal metabolism cause extensive damage to DNA, protein, and lipid.” They argue that “this damage (the same as that produced by radiation) is a major contributor to aging and to degenerative diseases of aging such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune-system decline, brain dysfunction, and cataracts.”1

Scientific research suggests that minimizing these deleterious free radical reactions by ensuring optimal antioxidant levels could therefore hold the key to effectively slowing aging and its unwanted consequences.

 Noni Extract Standardized Extract 99%

Noni (Morinda citrifolia) is a plant native to the polynesian island that has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of conditions. Noni has been shown to exert a mood stabilizing effect in a laboratory study, help maintain the growth of blood vessels within their normal limits and promote healthy cell growth in vitro, and to prevent DNA adduct formation by a carcinogenic substance.

Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3%

Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% has been shown to have beneficial properties related to brain function, depression, cellular mutation, and heart health.

In a rat study using a Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% tincture (alcohol-water extract), scientists discovered that a moderate 0.1-ml dose of the herb improved learning and retention after 24 hours.15 With repeated supplementation over a period of 10 days, significant improvements in long-term memory were observed.

 The active constituents in the herb have been found to affect the central nervous system by increasing ability to concentrate and improving cellular resistance to outside influences.

Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% may play a role in fighting depression. In a group of 128 adult patients with depression and neurasthenia (a condition of fatigue, weakness, and inability to recover by resting), treatment with 150 mg of Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% three times a day significantly reduced or eliminated symptoms in 64% of the subjects.

 Among a group of patients hospitalized for depression, the addition of Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% to a treatment regimen of tricyclic antidepressants reduced the length of hospital stays and improved the patients’ moods, thought processes, and motor activity.  Even better, the herb not only reduced troublesome side effects of the antidepressants, but also proved to be effective in treating less severe forms of depression without other medications.

 Studies have also demonstrated heart-healthy properties  of Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3%.  An eight-day trial of Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% extract increased the resistance of experimental animals to drug-induced arrhythmias.19 The researchers believe that this anti-arrhythmic effect is associated with the herb’s induction of opioid peptide biosynthesis. Another study found that  Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% prevented stress-induced cardiac damage and catecholamine release from the heart muscle.

 Several animal experiments suggest that Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% has anti-cancer properties.   Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% protected the bone marrow cells of mice against mutagenic, drug-induced chromosomal aberrations.  The herb also inhibited unscheduled DNA synthesis, providing evidence that it can raise the efficiency of cellular DNA repair mechanisms. Another experiment on rats with malignant lymphoma found that Siberian Rhodiola Rosea 3% was as beneficial in inhibiting tumor growth as a partial hepatectomy (removal of the liver) and slightly more effective in preventing metastasis. Further research is needed to determine whether these results extend to humans.

Inositol

Inositol is a compound that has been known for a long time, but in 1940 scientists first realized that it was an essential nutrient. It is a sugar-like substance and is part of the water-soluble B vitamin complex. It is found in the liver, kidney, skeletal and heart muscle. It is also present in the leaves and seeds of many plants. In animal tissues inositol occurs as a component of phospholipids and in plants it usually occurs as phytic acid, which is the hexaphosphate ester of inositol. In humans, inositol is synthesized in the intestinal tract by the beneficial or "friendly" bacteria.”

DMAE

Dimethylaminoethanol is a naturally occurring substance that is a precursor to choline. In scientific literature, this compound is referred to as either DMAE or deanol. The results of studies with laboratory animals indicate that administration of DMAE results in elevations of choline in the blood and brain.  In theory, this makes DMAE a supplement that can increase the brain’s production of acetylcholine, which is one of the most important neurotransmitters involved in memory, learning, recall, and thought processes. However, since it is a natural product, very little money has been invested in researching DMAE’s benefits and clinical applications, therefore available studies are only available through the 1980’s. Back in the 1960's and 1970's, Riker Laboratories marketed DMAE as a prescription drug named Deaner. Riker Laboratories had obtained authorization from the FDA to market Deaner and promote it as "possibly effective" for the following indications:

1. Learning problems associated with underachieving and shortened attention span

2. Behavior problems associated with hyperactivity

3. Combined hyperkinetic behavior and learning disorders with underachieving, reading and speech difficulties, impaired motor coordination, and impulsive/compulsive behavior, often described as a social, antisocial, or delinquent.

In 1983 Riker discontinued Deaner because the FDA demanded additional efficacy studies, which would have been more expensive than the product’s sales would support. However, DMAE has continued to be available as a nutritional supplement.

NAC N-Acetylcysteine

N-acetylcysteine is an effective mucolytic agent for treatment of chronic bronchitis and other pulmonary diseases that are complicated by the production of viscous mucous. It is also used as an antidote for acetaminophen poisoning  and found to be effective for the prevention of cardiotoxicity by doxorubicin.

N-acetyl cysteine is the acetylated form of the amino acid cysteine. N-acetyl cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that serves as a precursor for the synthesis of glutathione, a detoxifying agent in the body. N-acetyl cysteine is an antioxidant that has been used to combat viruses,  and helps the liver detoxify a wide range of pollutants such as cigarette smoke, auto exhaust  certain fungicides, and some toxic metals(6) through improving phase II detoxification mechanisms in the liver.
